Plum Island is a barrier Island in northeast Massachusetts. It is named for the wild beach plum shrubs that grow in the dunes. It is 11 miles in length and contains the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge that protects Piping Plovers where they breed and nest. Plenty of salt marshes here and all beaches generally open in mid August. Sandy Point is in the southern section and Plum Island Lighthouse is in the north part of town. This old building stands with all types of road equipment for the island. Great views behind this building.
