France/Vietnam: Henri Laurent Rivière (1827-1883), French naval officer, writer and imperialist. Photograph by Antoine Samuel Adam-Salomon (9 January 1818 - 29 April 1881), c. 1859. Henri Laurent Rivière was a French naval officer and writer, chiefly remembered today for his role in advancing the French conquest of Tonkin (northern Vietnam) in the 1880s. Rivière's seizure of the citadel of Hanoi in April 1882 inaugurated a period of undeclared hostilities between France and China that culminated two years later in the Sino-French War (1884-1885).
