Windmuller served in the Union Army in the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant in Comapny G of the 41st Regiment Infantry, Missouri Volunteers and was promoted to Captain on August 27, 1864 in Company D of the 2nd Regiment, United States Reserve Corps.
