This photograph was taken from a spot as close as possible to the viewpoint in Willy Ronis's photograph of 1959 entitled Escalier, Rue Vilin, published in Willy Ronis, Taschen, Koln, 2005. The manhole cover just visible behind the bench can be seen in Ronis's picture as can the group of houses directly behind car in this photograph, one of the few buildings to on this side of the rue Piat to survive the wholesale demolition of the area in order to remove some bad slums and create the Parc de Belleville.
