ANK development, as usually practised, is open tosome grave objections. Especially is this thecase when formulae requiring prolonged immer-sion are used, for in such an event chemical fog, stain and softening of the emulsion are prone tooccur. I once left a batch of undertimed plates in a cooldarkroom all night, only to find in the morning that sufficientheat had been generated by the chemical action to melt all thegelatine from the plates. Another defect in the newer method of developing for ashort stated time, as twenty minutes, is that if any of theplates are over-exposed they are likely to develop too , on the other hand, are profitably treated inthe weak tank solution; for such a solution is capable ofbringing out everything on the plate, though not always inthe stated time. After many trials with all sorts of formulae,I have settled down to what I call modified tank development, because I am convinced that
