The Russian Church (Greek Chapel) with five golden domes was built between 1847 and 1855 as a sepulcher for the mortal remains of the wife of Duke Adolf, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Michailovna from St. Petersburg and her baby. Both died shortly after the infant's birth. The interior of the church is lavishly decorated in marble. The chapel's correct name is the “Russian Orthodox Church of Wiesbaden“. During the 19th century, Orthodox churches were known as “Greek churches“. The Russian Orthodox community in Wiesbaden still holds its service here.
