Caption: Litang, Sichuan, China - Aug 2003. Khampa nomads inside their makeshift camp at the Litang Horse Racing Festival in Eastern Tibet. A win not only offers god-like status in a macho world, but also money and cigarettes. The camp is full of men -their wives stay behind to tend the yaks. Khampas are unruly horsemen with a fierce sense of independence. They have long being feared not only by the Chinese, but by other Tibetans. Their land was occupied by Chinese forces during the 1950's, and maintained ever since. Nomadism is a dying lifestyle as the government tries forcing them into permanent towns, offering incentives and easier living.
