Fig. 3 represents the cross section of a fruit room, and showing the dotted lines and arrows show the entrance of the cold air at a side window, andthe escape of the warmer air into a vertical chimney in which some upward currentis kept up by a stove above, or by the ventilator at the top. This window is closed assoon as enough air is admitted. The space between the slatted floor receives thewarmth of the earth during cold weather in winter. Instead of the stone wallrepresented m the figure, the upper part may be constructed with the air space alreadydescribed. This figure more particularly represents a fruit room in a dwelling ; thefloor is double to prevent the passage of heat.
