Busy commercial area in the hutong, Dazhalan Jie, Beijing, China

The Beijing Hutongs tend to be quaint, homey small roads or alleys that run through residential areas, past shops and public restrooms. They have been a way of life in Beijing for hundreds of years and the people living in them can frequently trace their family roots back to the ancestor that first moved in to the home. A house in the hutong tends to be very small, one or two room dwellings and everyone knows everything about everyone else in their hutong. They are quickly being knocked down and destoryed. Replaced by progress. Fairly recent and massive tourist interest could be their last hope.
