American Soldiers of the 3rd Armored Division inspecting knocked-out German Panzers from the "Windhund" after the battle.
(Colorized original photo). The German's plans were to take the bridge over the Ourthe River at Hotton and continue on wards to Moza, Belgium. The town of Hotton however was occupied by the American 51st Engineer Combat Battalion, the 84th Infantry Division and 3rd Armored Division having Stuarts, Shermans, M10 Tank Destroyers and artillery to counter the oncoming Germans. The attack began at about 7:30am on the 22nd of Decemeber, with a Panther leading the assault on the town approaching Hotton from the north-east. With the attack initially going well, destroying a few of the 3rd Armored Division's Stuarts and Shermans, a waiting 57mm Anti-tank gun near the bridge fired hitting the lead Panther, causing it to take cover near buildings on the Rue du Levant. An American soldier with a bazooka gave chase and knocked-out the Panther with others succumbing to overwhelming American artillery as well as heavy anti-tank mining knocking-out further Panzers over the following days.
