The work of rebuilding battle-torn regions of the Ardennes, Belgium, has started. Belgian civilians are removing the debris of buildings destroyed during the ill-fated German counter-offensive launched December 16, 1944, and are repairing damaged structures and roads. When the Nazis broke through in the Bulge area, many sections were left in ruins, some of it caused by Allied air power operating in support of ground forces to force Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt into the retreat which marked the beginning of the end of German occupation. These pictures were taken in June, 1945, after the cessation of hostilities on the continent. Archivist note: This picture looks east into Houffalize, where the Rue de la Roche crosses the Ourthe River. The armored fighting vehicle in the river appears to be a German Panzer V Panther tank or a derivative thereof.
