Governor Roosevelt is a direct descendant from Portia, Meteor, and the English variety Winter Cheer, one of its immediate parents being the well-known variety Gen. Maceo. Its habit somewhat resembles Maceo, but a far more vigorous grower, and a longer and much stiffer stem, the stem reaching 2| to 3 feet, and holding the flower very erect. It is a deep,-brilliant, scarlet, heavily shaded with maroon. The flower is full, having a large number of petals, which are so per- fectly and regularly arranged that the per- iphery of the flower produces a perfect semi-circle. The guard petals stand out well from and perpendicular to the calyx, while the calyx is fully as good and strong as that of the well-known Mme. Diaz Albertini. The size averages fully 3 inches in diameter throughout the season, many blooms being produced running from 3h up to 4 inches across under the guard petals. Et is a vigor- our, healthy grower, the foliage being of that rich, glaucus, green color that characterizes our most vigorous and most productive commercial Carnations. It comes into bloom in Xovember, and produces as many flowers as can be pro- duced by any Carnation plant of such perfect form, size, and strength of stem. Awarded National Society's certifi- cate, 93 points. Price, $ per dozen; $12 per 100; $100 per 1000. (See cut, page 18.). Other Novelties for 1901. DOROTHY. (Mrs. Grave.)
