Teales amputation, the flaps being made rectangular,is much like this, and may be done according to the rules else-where laid down for it. 4 Long posterior flap. The surgeon, standing as before, makes his first incision through the soft parts in front of thelimb, from the posterior edge of the bone on the farther side tothe posterior edge of the nearer, curving it slightly with its con-vexity downward ; he next enters a long double-edged knifebehind both bones, at the base of this incision, and cuts the pos-terior flap from within outward, making it of ample length andfullness. The remaining soft parts between the Fig. Flap aaputation of the leg with the tourniquet in position. bones are next divided, the flaps retracted, the bones sawedthrough, the vessels secured, and the wound closed, as in themethod already described. On account of the great weight of 804 SCIENCE AND ART OF SURGERY. the posterior flap, it must be very carefully supported until thehealing is fully accomplished. I have always given this latter method the preference whereverit could be performed at the upper portion of the leg, and thelong anterior flap at the lower part, and I believe the experienceof nearly all surgeons is to the same effect. The results, so faras my observation goes, lead me to the recommendation of thesemethods as given whenever the surgeon has the preference ofselecting
