Simi Valley Adventist School is proud to partner with the Fish and Wildlife Service to create a Schoolyard Habitat that will serve as a haven for native plant and animal species. Students, teachers and community members will have the opportunity to study cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena in relation to climate and plant and animal life. Many of the plants in the habitat were once used by the Chumash tribe for both food and medicine. This project gives us the ability to create a habitat where students can see what California might have looked like when the Chumash were the only people on the land, and promote plants not only for our own home usage but also as part of the ecosystem, said Stephen Stokes, principal of Simi Valley Adventist school. This March, the school, community members, congressional representatives and Service staff joined together to kick off the spring planting season. Once complete, this habitat has the potential to be the largest Fish and Wildlife Service Schoolyard Habitat in the nation.
