Containing a Sketch of the History of the Association,iviih a List of its Members and Other Information The Insurance Library Association is so directly an out-growth of the New England Insurance Exchange that a sketchof its history must begin with that of the mother Exchange was formed in 18S3 by the fire insurance fieldmen having jurisdiction in New England. It was a purelyvoluntary organization, exposed to the possibility of disruptionat any time, and in that case whatever property it might haveacquired would have been left without ownership. As thevalue of this property increased from year to year, the necessityof providing some permanent form of ownership for it becamemore and more apparent, and this culminated when it wasproposed on behalf of Exchange members to establish a libraryof fire ins
