Multicoloured traditional paper cutting (artist unknown) depicting stylised cock and flowers Lowicz Region Poland Europe

Polish paper-cuttings (wycinanki) became popular folk art form from the mid 19th century as an inexpensive means of decorating whitewashed walls in villages. In communist Poland 'wycinanka' was promoted as a form of folk art and in recent years it has been assimilated into the Polish tourist industry. Above traditional paper cuttings are from Lowicz Region (). They were bought in Ethnographic Museum but no name of artists was included. The 'wycinanki' of Lowicz evolved with time from simple designs to more complex. The earliest Lowicz paper-cuttings were stylized trees and flowers, birds, animals and dolls. They were replaced by more realistic figures of people wearing their characteristic striped costumes and the rooster with its magnificent tails took a predominant place. Botanical elements become also more realistic.
