GALLSTONE, X-RAY

The gallbadder is an oblong pouch containing bile. Measuring about 10 cm, the gallbladder is situated under the liver and serves as a reservoir for bile secreted by the liver. When the food bolus enters the digestive tract, the gallbladder releases bile into the intestine where it participates in the absorption of food, especially fats. The gallbladder seen on this sonography contains a cluster of small gallstones (lithiasis = the formation of calculi or concretions). Generally gallstones go unnoticed but sometimes they can provoke pain or infection (cholecystitis).
