Portable Substations. — On most electric roadsthere are certain sections of the line on which abnormally 194 TRACTION AND TRANSMISSION. heavy traffic must be handled at infrequent intervals oronly during a certain portion of the year, as for instancenear fairgrounds, parks, or summer resorts. To meet sucha condition 0,nd to guard against interruption of servicedue to accident to a unit in any substation, it is muchcheaper to make use of portable substations than to in-stall permanent spare units.
