Stevenson screens at a meteorological measuring station. The screens (white) contain thermometers, humidity sensors and other standard instruments for weather forecasting. The screens are designed to protect the instruments from the effects of direct radiation and rainfall (precipitation), whilst allowing the free movement of air through the louvred screens. The screens also ensure that conditions at different weather stations are as nearly standardised as possible, allowing a true comparison to be made between measurements from different locations. Photographed at the Finnish Meteorological Institute's Arctic Research Centre (FMI-ARC), Sodankyla, in Finnish Lapland.
