John Charles Fremont (1813-1890), US explorer, army officer and politician. Fremont assisted and led many surveys and explorations from 1838-1846, mapping large parts of what is now the north-west of the USA. During the Mexican-US war (1846-1848), he accepted the 1846 surrender of Mexican forces in California during its annexation from Mexico. Fremont then served as one of California's first two senators (1850-1851), and was the first-ever US presidential candidate for the Republican Party, losing the election of 1856. Fremont served briefly in the US Civil War (1861-1865) and was also governor of Arizona from 1878-1883. Several US cities and counties are named after him. This lithograph was published in 1856.
