Star commemorating Valentina Tereshkova, the 1st woman in space and the 1st flight with 3 cosmonauts in Moscow, Russia

June 16 1963 : Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (born March 6, 1937) was the first woman in space, now a retired Soviet cosmonaut. Out of more than four hundred applicants and then out of five finalists, she was selected to pilot Vostok 6 on the 16th of June 1963 and became the first woman to fly in space. This also made her the first civilian in space (she was only honorarily inducted into the USSR's Air Force as a condition on joining the Cosmonaut Corps). On this mission, lasting almost three days in space, she performed various tests on herself to collect data on the female body's reaction to spaceflight. October 12, 1964 : The flight of the Voskhod 1 (Ascent 1 or Dawn 1) was the first space flight to carry more than one crewman into outer space, the first space flight without the use of spacesuits, and the first to carry either an engineer or a physician into outer space. The flight of the Voskhod 1 also set a manned spacecraft altitude record of 336 km (209 mi). This Soviet mission was specifically planned to beat the American Gemini program to the milestone of carrying a multiman crew into outer space. The crew consisted of Vladimir Komarov (commanding pilot), Konstantin Feoktistov (engineer) and Boris Yegorov (medical doctor).
