His earlyeducation was obtained in the parochial and thepublic schools of his native place. He was gradu-ated at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, in then entered Johns Hopkins University, wherehe received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1893and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in his last two years at Johns Hopkins he gavelectures on French Literature in that University.
