Terra Nova Antarctic exploration. Expedition dog handler Cecil Meares (right, 1877-1937) and dog driver Dimitri Geroff (left) with their dog teams during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition and led by Robert Falcon Scott, the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott then attempted to reach the South Pole. Meares and Geroff are preparing to start south on 5 November 1911 to meet with Scott's polar party, which had left earlier. Meares and Dimitri turned back with the dogs on 11 December. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from the South Pole.
