DETROIT. 489 Eev. Gabriel Kicliard and Eev. John Dilhet were sent toaid him, the latter taking up his residence at Raisin Rev. Mr. Levadoux was recalled in 1801 to Baltimoreand then to France, Rev. Gabriel Richard became parishpriest of Detroit, of which he was for many years the accom-pHshed spiritual guide. He employeda chanter who was also to train the altar boys. Rev. joined him at Detroit in 1804 and opened a classicalschool, taking charge of the more remote missions. He had labored earnestly at Raisin River, endeavoring toexcite his flock to replace their crumbling church by a suitableedifice, but though meetings were held and promises made,nothing was done, and even the contributions pledged forhis support were not paid. His parish extended from San-dusky to St. Josephs River, on Lake Michigan, extending asfar south as Fort Wayne/ SIGNATURE OF BISHOP DENAUT. Meanwhile Detroit enjoyed the presence of a Bishop.
