Gay Quakers from New York Quarterly Meeting carrying banner in the 2011 Gay Pride Parade in New York City

The 30th annual Gay Pride Parade was held in New York City on Sunday June 26th, 2011, one day after the New York State Legislature passed the Marriage Equality Act legalizing same-sex marriage in the Empire State and it was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. New York became only the sixth state in the United States to pass such such a law. Placards in and along the parade read "Thank You Governor Cuomo" and "A Promise Kept," as New Yorkers showed their appreciation to the newly elected governor for helping to get the bill passed just six months into his first term. "New York has sent a message to the nation," Cuomo said before joining in the celebratory march down Fifth Avenue. "It is time for marriage equality."
