Avhich is ^\ to 4:\ times in length of head and equals interorbital width; mouth not extending quite to below anterior border of eye ; lips thick, much developed; teeth in 4 or 5 series, outer larger and conical or more or less distinctly bicuspid, 36 to 48 in upper jaw; 3 or 4 series of scales on the cheek, width of scaly part equal to diameter of eye. Gill-rakers short, 7 to 10 on lower part of anterior arch. Dorsal XV-XVII 8-10 ; spines increasing in length to the last, which measures about ^ Xo \ length of head; longest soft rays |- to | length of head. Anal III 7-8; third spine as long as longest dorsal. Pectoral f to f length of head, not extending to vertical of origin of anal. Ventral produced into a filament, reaching vent or anal. Caudal rounded. Caudal peduncle as long as deep. Scales more or less distinctly denticulate, 29-32 jj3j|; lateral lines yrnf. Olive-brown; a blackish opercular spot; a more or less distinct dark band above the upper lateral line and another behind x2.
