Nat.—Vol. 85 Radiocarbon Dating by Edmund D. Gill* From outer space there is a con-tinuous rain on the earth of all man-ner of particles. This cosmic radia-tion was discovered in 1911. We areprotected from it by the atmosphereabove us. The radiation causes changesin the atmosphere, and one of theseis to change nitrogen atoms (atomicweight 14) into carbon atoms (atomicweight 14). There are two differencesbetween ordinary carbon atoms andthose caused by cosmic radiation. Or-dinary carbon atoms are lighter(atomic weight 12), and those formedin the upper atmosphere are radio-active. The radioactive carbon formedin this way unites with oxygen in theatmosphere to form carbon dioxideupon which plants live. Because ani-mals live on plants, the radioactivecarbon becomes distributed throughthem also. You and I and all livingthings thus contain radioactive carbon. The amount of radioactive carbonin living things has altered in recentcenturies. First of all i
