A gondolier with his familiar black and white striped shirt is a rower that steers a gondola with a long oar, taking tourists towards the white limestone Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) connecting the Palazzo Ducale to the prison. It is so named as it was the prisoner’s last look at the outside world whilst heading for the tiny cells. The city is built on wooden platforms supported by centuries-old wooden stakes driven into the ground in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea off the east coast of northern Italy. Venice has no roads but a thread of weaving canals connected by pedestrian bridges. Its palaces are of either Gothic or Renaissance-designed architecture.
