Of the fewchanges made, however, one may be specifi-cally mentioned. It was the custom whenever a peasant diedto carry the corpse to the cemetery in acoffin hired at transient rates, and then,having dumped the deceased into a shallowgrave, to return what is facetiously known asthe wooden overcoat to its original owner,for further service. This was bad enough,considering the danger of infection thus en-gendered ; but much worse remains seems that the plot of ground reservedfor dead paupers was very circumscribed.
