The Company would appear to have been in some danger in1830 of losing this and the other pall, as well as the tapestry 21 (No. 23), as appears by the following resolution of the Court] ofFebruary 25 in that year: Resolved that it be referred to theMaster and Wardens to direct the funeral palls and tapestryCarpet lately delivered up by the Beadle Thomas Hasted to beplaced or deposited in such manner as they shall think proper sothat the same be not removed from the premises. It was notuntil 1885 that they were framed and hung upon the walls. 22. PALL, OR HERSE-CLOTH About 1520-1530. The middle consists of a piece of cloth of gold velvet, thepattern in purple and gold. It is of Italian origin. The foursurrounding flaps are entirely covered with embroidery in silkand gold, and are edged with a purple and gold fringe. The two long flaps are alike, in seven compartments of unequalwidth, divided by pilasters. In the middle is the Baptism of OurLord, St. John kneeling on the bank of the stream to the right ofthe Saviour, an Angel to the left holding the Saviours robe, whileabove is the Holy Dove, with a scroll inscribed hic est filiusmeus. The background is a landscape with church towers. Intwo other compartments are the Arms1 of the Company, andthe remaining four contain the inscription 44 Ecce Agnus Dei inlarge ornamental letters.
