In 1865 the man-sion on The Glebe burned ^^§MUmuid VAN NESS MANSION, AND DAVY BURNS S COTTAGE. It is customary to refer to Burns as a common old fellow,but he appears to have used the first moneys derived from thesale of, his land and lots to educate his daughter in a mannerto fit her for the exalted company expected on the site of hisfarm. Seven or eight years elapsed between this good fortuneand her marriage. A copy of the funeral discourse of Rev. William Hawley,(Nicholas Callans copy), rector of St. Johns Church, deliver-ed on the occasion of the death of Mrs. Van Ness, 1882, is inpossession of W. H. Philip, Esq. Parts of this discourse follows : * She survived her only child, Mrs. Ann E. .on the spot on which she expired, the whole of Mrs. YanNesss life had been passed in witnessing the beginning, therise, and progress of this flourishing metropolis.
