Diverticulum of the stomach. Endoscopic view of a diverticulum (upper left) in the wall of the gastric fundus. Diverticula are outpouchings caused through weaknesses of the muscle layers in the stomach wall (mucosa). They are often asymptomatic and can lead to inflammation and infection of the area if left untreated. The gastric fundus is the left section of the stomach and lies slightly above the rest of the stomach. This allows the gases produced by digestion to accumulate in it.
