Photo shows Alan Clark laying a cross at the site on Kinder Scout where a Handley Page Halifax crashed in 1943 killing five crew and injuring two after failing to find its way home after flak damaged electrics over Frankfurt.:..Killed:..Pilot, Sergeant Ernest Fenning, , Warrant Officer 2nd Class, Jean Fortin 25 (Canada).Flight Engineer, Sergeant Eric Lane, Operator, Sergeant Frank Squibbs, Gunner, Sergeant Boris Short, :..Bomb Aimer, Sergeant Victor Garland, Gunner, Sergeant James MAck, The mountain rises up sharply in front of us. .We climb higher into the thick fog and quickly lose sight of where we are going and where we've been. .It is easy to understand why so many 'planes have smashed into the hidden hills that surround us. .I have joined Alan Clark on his trek to the remote corners of Kinder Scout to lay poppies at two crash sites where ten British airmen died in World War places, rising to over 2000ft the Peak District juts-out, high into the sky, ready to collect unsuspecting pilots and their aircrew. .One hundred and seventy-eight aircraft have crashed here. The Second World War alone saw 122 military aeroplanes succumb to the concealed peaks with the death of 157
