Potassium reacting with chlorine gas in a gas jar. Potassium (K) is a soft, silvery-white, alkali metal that occurs naturally, bound to other elements in seawater and many minerals. Potassium reacts violently with all the halogen gases - fluorine (F2), chlorine (Cl2), bromine (Br2) and iodine (I2) - to form solid potassium halide salts. Here potassium is reacting with chlorine gas (yellow/green) to produce solid potassium chloride (KCl).
