Vintage photo circa 1920s of Lithuanian-born American singer and actor Al Jolson (1886 - 1950). Jolson, born Asa Yoelson, emigrated to the US as a young boy and sang in circus shows, vaudeville and minstrel shows before becoming a massive Broadway star in the 1910s and 1920s. His fame was such that at the peak of his popularity he was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer". Jolson also starred in the first full-length talking movie - The Jazz Singer in 1927 - and released numerous hit records. His career declined slightly in the 1930s but he won renewed fame in 1946 with the release of the musical movie The Jolson Story, a film loosely based on his life. Photo by Bain News Service.
