Sheffield's famous 'Hole in the Road" was a large underpass which was directly in the city center. Major redevelopments within Sheffield have now filled in the once Brutalist landmark. Image was taken in June 1968
Castle Square, known as the hole in the road came about from the heavy bombing that sheffield took during WWII. The original streets were cleared to make way for a large underpass and subterranean shops became an iconic landmark of post war Sheffield. It even boasted a large fish tank set within one of its walls. Sadly it was not to last as vandalism and graffetti took ahold. Along with the lack of use, the 'Hole' was eventually filled in during the mid 90s to make way for the cities regeneration which saw the reintroduction of trams in Sheffield.
