Fernando de Soto,governor of Cuba, landed at Tampa Bay, Florida, with neailysix hundred men, equipped for the conquest of a kingdomlike that of Peru or Mexico. He found no treasures, only hard-ships and disappointments, but discovered (1541) the Mississippi River at the present site of Memphis.
