This road has a 92 feetgrade, laid with very narrow rails, and suc-ceed by a 130 feet grade, laid with rails of theusual full width. It is found that an enginecan draw more upon the 130 than on the 92feel grade, although the actual resistance onthe former grade are full 33 per cent, greaterthan on the latter. The fact shows howmuch is gained in the adhesion of the engineupon the broad rails. Mr. R. A. Wilder, theSuperintendent of the road, will soon experi-ment with rails of three inches width, on whichstill better results are anticipated— 106 RAILROAD British Manufactures.—Notwithstand-ing the strikes and turn-nuts of the past year,it appears that a larger consumption of cottonhas taken place in Great Britain than at anyprevious period, the quantity in 1836 being35,000,000 lbs. weight; in 1845, 597,000,000;in 1852, 745,000,000 ; in 1853, 734,000,000 ;and in 1S54, about 780,000,000. The increaseupon last years deliveries to the trade ofGreat Britain—Messrs. DuFay & Co. observe—is 6 2-5 per cent.; to Russia, Germany,Holland and Belgium, an increase of 4£ percent; to France of 21., per cent.; to Spain of2 per cent.; and a decrease in the trade of theUnited States of S per cent, The increase ofthe consumption in this country, in the faceof strikes and bad trade, is accounted for bythe fact that manufacturers have been muchmore generally engaged on heavy fabrics—fabrics in which more raw material and lesslabor are employed.
