A new departure was given to rhinoscopy, carried out from the front, by Zaufal,9 who,in 1875, first recommended the use of a funnel-shaped speculum, long enough to passcompletely through the nasal cavity. Notwithstanding that the merit of this method hasbeen contested by Weber-Liel, Gruber, Schrotter, and Voltolini, it is undoubtedly ofvalue, and Habermann, a pupil of Zaufals, has recorded a very large number of casesin which the funnel-speculum has been employed with much advantage. Nasal Specula.—For ordinary examination of the front part of the cavi-ties, Frankels speculum will be found most serviceable. The proximal extremities of the shanks are connectedby a horizontal bar, through which there is a central screw acting on bothblades. Frankel recommends that one blade of the instrument should beintroduced into each nostril, but mentions that both blades may be passed 1 Cours dOperations de Chirurgie, Paris, 1714, 2e ed., p. 483 and Fig. 37 Wien. med.
