A practical treatise on mechanical dentistry . tinguished German chemist, by means of asimple contrivance represented in Fig. modern heat-producing appliances usu-ally denominated Bunsen burners utilizethe same principle in the generation ofheat, and differ only in mechanical con-struction from Bunsens original very simple contrivance embracing the principle of the Bun-sen burner, is shown in Fig. 3. The gas is supplied through aflexible rubber tube connected with the stem of the burner, andconnected at the other end with any ordinary gas burner conve-niently located in the laboratory. For soldering small pieces, and for many other purposes requiring a ready and manageableheat, the writer has used this simple appliance, with great satis-faction. It is especially useful in waxing up a base plate, heating water, vulcanizing, and other minor operations requiringa moderate and easily-graduated heat. To obtain a flame of greater volume than is possible with theburner just described, one such as shown in Fig. 4 is GENERATION AND APPLICATION OF HEAT. 33 This contrivance is especially adapted to drying and heating uplarge pieces before soldering, and for melting metals in consider-able quantities. Another heating apparatus of recent introduction, designed, in Fig. 3. Fig. 4.
