Itis carved from a solid block. ofmarble, five feet, eleven inches inheight and thirty-one inches inbreadth at the base. The face ofthe slab bears in high relief a figureof Surya, the sun god, identicalwith Savitri, Ravi and Aditya,guardian of the southwest, in theHindu pantheon. At Baroda, inGujarat, where a temple is dedi-cated to him, he is known as SuryaNarayana. He is represented inthe sculpture as standing in hissplendid chariot, drawn by theseven coursers of the sun, andholding in each hand a gracefullysculptured lotus. At his feet, andseated upon an elephants head, isa figure of Aruna, the leglesscharioteer of the sun, holding inone hand the heaven-spun reins,and in the other a whip. On eachside of Surya are two attendants,the nearest being female figurescarrying chowries or fly brushes,the other two, of larger size, beingmale figures, representing thepriest and soldier castes; at theirfeet are two smaller figures of archers with bows.
