Onall sides of the peak on which we now stood — on the summit ofwhich a dozen persons could scarcely assemble—we beheld vast,glittering precipices; at the foot of these lie the plains of snowwhich contribute to the increase of the numerous glaciers, situatedstill lower; namely, to the left, the superior glacier of Grindel-wald, and that of Lauteraar; to the right, the glaciers of Gauli,of Reufen, and of Rosenlaui, out of which rose the peaks of theWellhorn, the Tosenhorn, and Engelhorner. Having surveyed with unbounded admiration and wonder theunrivaled scene, the adventurers descended, and, after an absenceof four days, returned to Interlachen. Such was the labor ofclimbing a single peak of the Alps ; and that nearly four thousandfeet less elevated than Mont Blanc !. THE OPOSSUM
