Mr. Bayless, who is the son of Benjaminand Wilhelmine C. Bayless, married ClaraE. Lindamood, April 4, 1899. They haveone child, Wilhelmine Crawford Bayless. Baylis, Robert Nelson (, 87), wasborn in Englewood, N. J., March 16, 1867;the son of Robert and Martha N. (Smith)Baylis. He was an apprentice in the shopsof the Southwark Foundry & Machine Co.,Philadelphia, Pa., 1887-89; draughtsman, and then successively head draughtsman,purchasing agent, electrician, and chief en-gineer of the C & C Electric Co., NewYork, 1889-93. In the latter capacity hehad entire charge of the works of the com-pany, including the manufacturing as well. R. N. Baylis as the designing of a variety of electricalmachinery. He designed and constructed afull- line of motors from one to one hundredhorse-power during this engagement. Itwas at this time also that he devised the in-genious reaction brush-holder, whichwas such a radical departure from all pre-vious devices of the kind that when it wasfirst introduced it aroused endless argumentsas to whether the carbon could possibly re-main in the holder when the machine was inmotion. Mr. Baylis introduced numerousimprovements into the factory methods andmanagement of his company. In 1893 heresigned from the C & C Electric Co., andvisited the Columbian Exposition at Chica-go, and among other engagements was em-ployed by the Committee of Awards intesting some of the large direct connectedrailway and power generato
