Crews dyeing the Chicago River green for the St. Patrick's Day holiday as thousands line the banks of the Chicago River. The process is an annual tradition in Chicago. The St. Patrick's Day celebration begins early in the city on a Saturday five days prior to the actual holiday. In Chicago, unless St. Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday it is celebrated the Saturday before March 17 with a variety of festivities including dyeing the Chicago River green, the St. Patrick's Day Parade and, of course, a good deal of alcohol consumption. As the celebration is always on a Saturday, it draws crowds from throughout the area, the Midwest and the nation.
