This he pursued suc-cessfully for some years, the while adding tohis general education, incidentally, and in acursory way dipping into the study of lawfor which he had a natural bent. Beforetaking up systematically the study of hischosen profession he was elected registerand recorder of the Orphans Court of Fay-ette county, overcoming a large standingDemocratic majority. He served in this of-fice from 1854 to 1857 with signal this period he devoted his time soassiduously to reading law, under the pre-ceptorship of Amzi S. He and Dr. Smith Fuller only wereelected on the Republican ticket in 1879,when they ran seven hundred votes ahead oftheir ticket, and in 1880 Colonel Collins alonewas elected on the Republican ticket.
