House 1 at Skara Brae Neolithic settlement, Orkney, Scotland, UK, looking W showing central hearth flanked by 2 slab-built box beds (one with 'bedposts') & a stone dresser against the wall opposite the entrance passage. Around 5,000 years ago, a cluster of 6 self-contained drystone-walled houses linked by subterranean passages was inserted into an existing midden so that the refuse material insulated the walls. A separate workshop (8) stood to just to the W. Other features in the houses include wall cupboards (keeping-places), intramural cells (some with drains to serve as lavatories), guard cells with bar-holes to secure the slab doors, kerbed & paved enclosures, stone tanks set in the floor, & stone rubbers, mauls, querns, mortars & basins.
