Key West, Red Rim Butterfly - Biblis hyperia
Key West has a charm that has attracted many people. Part of that charm is the climate which is characterized as tropical savanna climate with only a small difference in monthly mean temperatures. According to the National Weather Service, the Florida Keys have never recorded a frost or freeze. Additionally, the heat of the summer is mitigated by the easterly tradewinds. The wet season falls in the May to October part of the year with the dry season occurring from November to April. Not only do people love the climate, many butterflies do as well. One of the real treats of this visit to Key West was a tour of The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. There were many hundreds of butterflies — typically 50 to 60 species at any one time, all tropical. They are raised on butterfly farms then shipped to Key West and released only within the conservatory. And even though they have no voices, their photos speak for themselves.
