Large areas of the Lake Towada froze over following a particularly harsh winter season. The foreground is normally water.
Lake Towada is the largest crater lake in Honshu island, Japan, and the 12th largest in Japan. The lake is a popular tourist destination. The lake is not known to freeze during winter. But in the year the photo was taken, a large segment of the lake froze because of the unusually cold winter.
