On leaving Monterey the President remarked to Manager Schonewald, on behalf of himself and party, that " Del Monte, with its magnificent grounds and beautiful surroundings" was the most delightful spot they had ever visited ; and that there was nothing in the world to coin- pare with the famous eighteen-mile drive which circles the Monterey penin- ; The day devoted to the drive, including Lhe outdoor luncheon which was spread under Lhe grand old trees at Cypress Point, was declared to be, by the ladies of the party, the " red-leiter day " of the Presidential tour, EX-PUESIDENT R. B. HAYES.âWe shall always remember our visit to Monterey as one of the most agreeable episodes of our lives. We shall never forget that lovely hotel among the trees and flowers; and the climateâit was a perfect summer's day on the verge of winter.
