It wasan inspiring occasion, but the Centennial ofthe State of Tennessee, celebrated at the capi-tal in 1896-97, crowned the city with laurelsthat will long be remembered with honorablepride. It was a revelation,—a noble memorialof a century of statehood. The dream ofJames Robertson, the father and founder ofNashville, was more than realized. Circling hills surroundthe city, and the parks upon them are unsur-passed in this section of the country. Theavenues are broad and well shaded, and whilethe residences are, as a rule, handsomely mod-ern, many splendid specimens of Colonial archi-tecture are to be seen.
